The Star of Africa

Hans Joachim Marseille is beautifully captured in this highly detailed, lifelike work of art by Rick Terry. Marseille is shown in his typical "Africa" dress of shorts, shirt with rolled up sieves, field cap, goggles and unusual sandals.

As if posing for a photographer, Marseille triumphantly displays the rudder from his last Bf l09 F. complete with 158 victory markings. This vignette took place just before his untimely death on September 30, 1942, when he bailed out of his new Bf l09 G.

Hans-Joachim Marseille is hailed as the leading Luftwaffe expert of the Western front with 158 victories flying a total of 382 missions. Hailed by General Galland as an "...unequalled virtuoso among the fighter pilots", the Star of Africa was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Marseille is only one of nine Fighter Pilots to receive this honor.
